7/23/2023 0 Comments Active listening skills definition![]() Silence is indeed golden especially when used to gather information as a listener. Rather, we do provide positive feedback using body language, eye contact, and non word sounds like "umh, huh". If someone is speaking, and we want them to continue talking, we do not interrupt. It is more painful for a speaker than for a listener. DO NOT interrupt unless absolutely necessary. As an active or empathic listener, silence is a very valuable tool. Some of the finest police interrogators, counselors, teachers and parents learn more by maintaining silence than by asking questions. The therapist typically restates what has been said to ensure accurate understanding. To often a truly revealing moment is never brought to fruition because of an untimely interruption. a psychotherapeutic technique in which the therapist listens to a client closely, asking questions as needed, in order to fully understand the content of the message and the depth of the client’s emotion. The final rule for active or empathic listening is to effectively use silence. Walk and talk is such a successful strategy that works well for active listening!Ĥ. If we want to provide undivided attention to a child, a better way to show your attention is to do a "walk and talk" as we discussed in Chapter 2. We should be careful how we use it when listening. All primates use eye contact to varying degrees. BUT, eye contact can also be a form of aggression, of trying to show dominance, of forcing submissive behavior. Eye contact can be a form of positive feedback. Positive feedback is an endorphin releaser for the giver and the sender. Applause is the reason many performers perform. Listeners can also send messages to speakers using body language. From their body language the speaker can tell if he is speaking too softly or loudly, too quickly or slowly, or if the vocabulary or the language is inappropriate. The speaker maintains eye contact to be sure the listener or listeners are paying attention. In most listening situations people use eye contact to affirm listening. Absolutely important is dedicating your undivided attention to the speaker if you are to succeed as an active listener. The Chinese symbol that we used to describe listening used the eyes and undivided attention. Give your undivided attention to the speaker. This empathetic behavior is an indicator of emotional intelligence as described in Chapter 3.ģ. If we would speak to anyone about issues important to them, we need to avoid sharing our judgment until we have learned their judgment. Once a child knows your judgment, there is little reason to ask the question unless the intention is to argue. The kids already know what the adults have to say. ![]() There is a reason kids do not usually speak with adults about drugs, sex, and rock and roll. 7/23/2023 0 Comments Strategies to scaffold learning![]() ![]() Teachers can create and carry out a classroom culture that either fosters or discourages engaged and active thinkers. This makes the act of thinking visible to children and invites them to reflect on it. When teachers value the thinking of early learners, they intentionally design scenarios in which children are cognitively engaged. ![]() But more recent research shows the importance of supporting children’s innate intellectual dispositions and capacities as active learners (Katz 2015). Historically, early childhood classrooms were built around the idea that children needed teacher-directed instructions and guidance to reach predetermined outcomes. What inspires children’s curiosity? What drives active and engaged thinking in children, as illustrated in the opening vignette? Philosophers, researchers, and educators have long grappled with these questions. “How does a rainbow feel?”Ĭlara thinks for a moment. “Have you ever touched a rainbow before?” Lisi asks. “But how did you connect a rainbow to what you touched in that box?” “What makes you think it’s a rainbow?” Lisi asks. She shows her drawing and says, “My hypothesis is a rainbow.” So I touched the wheels and they moved.”Ĭlara is next. “So when I touched it, the bus was clean, and wheels were yellow. “When I was little, my dad had a workshop for buses,” Lily says. “What did you connect to when you touched the object inside the box?” “Can you describe with details why you have that hypothesis?” Lisi asks. “My hypothesis is that I think it is a bus,” says Lily, holding up her drawing. Once they finish their drawings, they share and listen to each other’s ideas. Lisi gives them time to make their predictions, then asks them to sit down and draw their hypotheses. The children eagerly take turns inserting their hands into the box and touching the object. Then, you’re going to go to the table and draw what you think you felt. Second, once you touch what’s in here, your mind is going to think and make connections. “First, you are going to put your hand through this hole and feel what’s inside. “We are going to follow three simple steps,” she says as she introduces the activity. Carefully, she cuts a hole in the box’s side so her children can reach in and touch the juicer without seeing it. If you want to make another kind of fruity crumble muffin then these apple crumble muffins are easy to adapt. Personally I think apple and ginger crumble muffins would be amazing! Can you substitute the apple and use another fruit in these muffins? I love the combination of apple and cinnamon, as you can probably tell from the amount of recipes I have! However, you could use ground ginger instead or even mixed spice. Or why not add a few raisins? Can you use different spices? You could easily get away with adding an extra apple too to make them even fruitier. Feel free to add larger chunks if your family love the soft apple pieces. I kept the diced apple very small in these muffins as my children are likely to pick out the fruit pieces if they are too big. Can you adapt this apple crumble muffins recipe? I am firmly in the fruity muffins camp, although the rest of my family would probably opt for chocolate! ![]() Some people love chocolate muffins and some people love fruity muffins. I love crumbles and one way of making a muffin that little bit extra special is to add a crumble topping. This time I went for spiced muffins with a crumble topping. Your hearing care provider will examine the responses and tell you whether your child has APD, and what type of processing disorder he or she has. The hearing specialist will perform a number of tests, such as asking your child to repeat certain words and phrases or press a button when he hears certain tones. If your doctor suspects APD, he will likely send your child to an audiologist for confirmation. In addition, your child may be evaluated by a psychologist (to rule out a cognitive disability) or a speech-language pathologist (to examine your child’s ability to use written and oral language).Īn audiometric exam is the only way to definitively diagnose APD. For example, he may ask your child’s teacher about specific behaviors that can indicate APD, such as mishearing instructions or an inability to hear in a noisy environment. Your doctor may take information from a number of sources to determine whether a child has APD. As the two conditions share a number of symptoms, it is important to have your child evaluated carefully to avoid ineffective treatment. Many children who suffer from APD are misdiagnosed with attention deficit or behavioral conditions. Problems processing auditory information can cause memory deficits, diminished attention, and difficulty using and understanding spoken language. There may be nothing wrong with the child’s ears, but APD is considered a hearing disorder because the brain does not correctly perceive the sounds the child hears. How should we understand the answers that GPT-3 is providing? Let’s start by being clear on what it is not doing. Here is an example from one of Matt’s tests: Please note we have no plans to actually implement GPT-3 at Help Scout - this was a purely experimental exercise. Next, Matt took some genuine customer questions (different from the six examples) and had GPT-3 generate responses. That’s why some of the answers sound real, but don’t make much sense.
